Alverno honored with two Quality Program Awards

---- — CLINTON — The Alverno Health Care Facility was honored with two Quality Program Awards by the Iowa Health Care Association and Iowa Center for Assisted Living at their annual convention of long term care providers on Oct. 2 in Des Moines.

The Quality Program Awards recognize programs that put quality into action within the long term care setting. The Alverno received the award for Life Enrichment-Social Event for their Camp Courageous program and the award for Community Enrichment for their Youth Exploring Senior Services program.

Camp Courageous, an outdoor camp, offers opportunities to people with disabilities from ages 1 to 105. The fun and challenging activities are offered in a safe and supportive environment. The Alverno took a group of long-term care residents on a day trip to experience the activities and challenges at Camp Courageous. Their day at camp included canoeing, a tree climb and zip line adventure and a campfire lunch.

The goal was to build confidence among the residents, challenge their beliefs in what they can still do at their age and to simply have fun and laugh. This outing supported the organization’s belief that life is for living. Residents realized they can still accomplish things, even from a wheelchair or with limitations. Everyone was proud of what they had accomplished during their amazing day.

“I think the residents were really brave in the activities they tried,” said Alverno Activity Director Rebecca Schmidt. “Our day at camp was filled with trust between the residents and staff, as well as laughter. I am happy we went and will be looking forward to next year’s trip.”

The YESS program was designed to help high school and college students in the Clinton community use their academic skills and earn volunteer experience while learning about career opportunities in senior care. The six-week program included three learning tracks: administration and quality improvement; marketing, information technology and human resources; and activities and social services. Students spent two days a week with leadership learning about the day-to-day responsibilities and then finished the program by reporting on their experience and what they learned.

The program helped the students expand their volunteer base, gain leadership skills and explore healthcare career opportunities. The students were surprised at the amount of activity that goes on behind the scenes at a long term care facility.
