Mentoring program workers see reduction in hours

CLINTON — A loss in expected grant funding that sent its budget into a freefall means Clinton School District’s afterschool program will have to do more with less for the upcoming school year.

Afterschool program coordinator Loras Osterhaus made a recommendation to the school board Monday night that would grant no increase in salaries for program workers. He also said he had to reduce some workers’ hours to stay within budget.

The board accepted his recommendation on a 5-0 vote.

Curriculum Director John Jorgensen said reduction in funding of a $300,000 grant by one-third -- a grant that was awarded in January and then reduced to equalize funding for programs throughout the state -- the upcoming loss of another mentoring grant this summer and the implementation of the national health care act meant expenses had to be cut.

Osterhaus said the program will still serve 250-300 children at the six sites during the school year, a need which remains steady, he said.

Osterhaus will continue to seek grants and said the program also will work to recruit volunteers to carry it out.

Meanwhile, the board also approved raises for union and non union employees Monday night.

The board accepted one-year contracts with the district’s secretaries, food service and custodial workers and set salaries for non union employees not covered under a collective bargaining agreement.

The secretaries’ union workers will receive a 3.2 salary increase while the food service workers will receive a 3.214 percent increase. Custodial workers will receive a 3.21 percent, across-the-board total salary schedule increase.

The Clinton district’s non union employees also will receive a 3.2 percent total package increase for the 2013-2014 school year.

Under a one-year contract approved last week, Clinton’s teachers are receiving a 3.2 percent total package increase, which includes salary and insurance.
