Blood donors are needed

Herald Staff Report

DAVENPORT — After a winter storm and two holidays in the last 10 days, the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center is reminding blood donors the need to provide blood and blood components for local hospitals never takes a day off.

As MVRBC looks to the New Year, the need for O-negative donors (the universal blood type) is especially strong. To increase appointments at its local donor centers and mobile blood drives, MVRBC is holding a daily drawing for a $100 gift card through Saturday, Jan. 12. To find a nearby blood drive or donor center, call 1-800-747-5401 or see www.bloodcenter.org.

“We’ve experienced a sustained period of decreased collections, which means we’ll need a strong start to 2013 to make sure we have an adequate supply for hospitals we serve,” said Amanda Hess, director of Donor Relations. “We’re looking for people to make a resolution to give the gift of life, and get started right away with a blood donation this week,” added Hess.

All people who present to give blood at an MVRBC Donor Center or mobile blood drive now through Jan. 12 will be entered in a daily drawing for a $100 gift card.

Locally, this includes the Thursday, Jan. 3, blood drive from 2 – 7 p.m. at Wild Rose Casino in Clinton. To schedule an appointment to donate, call the Blood Center at 1-800- 747-5401.

MVRBC is the provider of blood and blood components to Mercy Clinton as well as hospitals in DeWitt, Dubuque, Morrison, Ill., the Quad-Cities and beyond.
