Bonus-point wins in the three heaviest weights clinched a 47-30 victory for the Clinton High School wrestling team against Burlington on Thursday night.
The River Kings held a 30-27 lead with four matches left, but freshman Justin Guilliams, the Mississippi Athletic Conference runner-up at 195 pounds, started the strong finish with a 17-2 technical fall against Broishon Turner. Rafael Ramirez, who was ill and missed the MAC meet, followed with a first-period pin at 220, and MAC runner-up Jake Oldaker finished the run with another pin.
“I thought our kids did a nice job coming back after we lost a couple of tough matches,” Clinton coach J.D. Lueders said. “It was their Senior Night, and their fans were fired up, so coming out of there with a ‘W’ was a compliment to our kids and their heart.”
Clinton also got pins from Riley Chapman (132), Dustin Caldwell (152), Dillion Chase (160) and Nick Hatheway (170).
In the featured match of the night, Burlington senior Austin Boyd, ranked fourth by thepredicament.com, pinned third-ranked Alex Caldwell at 145 pounds. They did not meet in the MAC meet, where Caldwell placed second and Boyd was third.
There were three rematches from the MAC tournament. Dustin Caldwell pinned Kellen Kemp both times. Curtis Ilg narrowed the margin against Dallas Terry at 126. Terry, who won 12-0 on Saturday, won by a 2-0 score Thursday. At 106, Logan White of Burlington won a wild 16-15 match against Amani Larson, who pinned White on Saturday
The Grayhounds, ranked one spot above the Kings at No. 8 in thepredicament.com team ratings, competed without MAC runner-up Dalton Witte at 160 and fourth-place finisher Garrett Grimshaw at 132, but second-ranked Matt Seabold, who missed the MAC meet, was back at 182.
The River Kings finished the regular season with a 12-2 dual record, and they compete next Wednesday in the regional duals at Marion Linn-Mar.
“Twelve-2 heading to regional duals is something all these guys should be proud of,” Lueders said. “We need to get everyone healthy and ready to battle Linn-Mar.”
