Plans taking shape for county satellite offices

DEWITT — With phase two of the Clinton County satellite offices well under way, the county's Board of Supervisors and building maintenance department are now discussing their future and pushing forward with phase three of the project a new parking lot and garage storage area.

The board of supervisors met Monday and Tuesday with building maintenance manager Corey Johnson to go over plans for the parking lot and garage, and the details involved with the process.

Johnson, along with IIW Engineer Mike Ruden, on Tuesday discussed with the board some of the final design plans for the parking lot and why the project costs nearly $300,000 to complete.

"We keep hearing (from the public) that $300,000 is a lot of money for a parking lot. I think that's what I'm getting the biggest questions on, and that's a big number for concrete," Supervisor Jill Davisson said. "But, I think people need to understand that it's not just going in and pouring some cement. There's several projects that are going to be included within that."

According to Johnson, the main expense of the parking lot will be to establish a sub base to secure a foundation for the lot. In doing so, contractors will be required to level the slope of the previous parking lot, allowing for proper drainage into newly established storm basins.

The former lot at the satellite office sloped toward the building, causing substantial damage to the northeast corner of the building, an issue that, according to Johnson, needs to be handled sooner rather than later.

"One side is going to have to be approximately 5 feet (but) up where the generator pad is going, they're going to have to be down 8 to 8 1/2 feet to stay at the same height straight across. And that's where a lot of your expense is coming from," Johnson said. "The back corner of the building, the north corner, there was a terrible mold problem and the issue was everything was running right into that back corner of the building. So, if we don't change that, we're going to be back to square one in a matter of a few years."
