Teen sentenced for robbery

CLINTON — An 18-year-old man will serve up to 10 years in prison for a gunpoint robbery at Wild Rose Casino.

Destin R. Clark was sentenced in Clinton County District Court on Thursday for flashing a handgun at a 36-year-old Illinois man at Clinton Lawn Cemetery, demanding money and forcing the man to an ATM at Wild Rose Casino on Aug. 27.

Clark, of Neenah, Wis., pleaded guilty last month to second-degree robbery, a Class C felony. Because it is a forcible felony, Clark will be required to serve seven years in prison before being eligible for parole.

“It’s sad to say that I think incarceration is going to provide him a better chance than his current lifestyle on the streets as a homeless person,” Clinton County Attorney Mike Wolf said during Clark’s sentencing.

Clinton police arrested Clark and 18-year-old Dylon White, who police classified as homeless, in connection with the robbery on Aug. 29 in Folletts.

Clark originally was charged with first-degree robbery and possession of a firearm as a felon. Robbery in the first degree is a Class B felony, carrying as much as 25 years in prison.

Pursuant to the plea agreement, the theft in the first degree and possession of a firearm as a felon charges were dismissed.

Clark asked Judge Thomas Reidel during the sentencing if there was anyway to avoid the prison term, telling the judge he had great plans for his future.

Reidel suggested Clark use his time in prison to consider the impact of his actions on the victim and the community at-large.

“This was a serious offense and you are going to pay a serious penalty,” Reidel said. “Reading the pre-sentence investigation I see you have what I would consider to be admirable dreams and goals for your life, but it’s going to be up to you.”

Clark also will be required to pay $370 in restitution for the cellphone and $20 in cash his victim lost.

White will appear in court next week.
