BOONE — Making it to Des Moines won’t be an easy trip for the area Class 2A baseball teams. The road to the state tournament is full of obstacles in the form of rated teams.
Postseason assignments have come out for Class 1A and Class 2A, and every area team has at least one ranked team in its district.
Ninth-ranked Lisbon, which made it to last year’s state semifinals, is in Class 1A District 7, which includes Prince of Peace, Preston, Marquette Catholic and Calamus-Wheatland.
But, the area 2A teams have even more road blocks in their paths. Bellevue is in District 8, which includes No. 2 Dyersville Beckman and No. 3 Cascade. Meanwhile, Camanche and Northeast are part of a District 10 that includes sixth-ranked Wilton and feeds into Substate 5, which includes District 9 and No. 9 Iowa City Regina.
Camanche opens at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 13, against Durant-Bennett in Wilton, with the winner facing Northeast at 5 p.m. July 16, also in Wilton. The other half of the bracket has Tipton and North Cedar playing after the Camanche-Durant-Bennett game, with the winner meeting host Wilton at 7 p.m. July 16.
The championship is set for July 20, with the winner of that one advancing to the July 23 substate game in Solon.
Bellevue opens play in District 8 against Clayton Ridge at 5 p.m. July 13 in Dyersville, with the winner facing Beckman at 7 p.m. July 16. The district final — the other side of the bracket includes Cascade — is at 7 p.m. July 20, with the substate game set for 7 p.m. July 23 in Oelwein.
Class 1A play opens on Tuesday, July 16, for the area schools, all playing in District 7.
Marquette Catholic plays Midland, followed by Prince of Peace vs. Calamus-Wheatland in a doubleheader in Calamus that starts at 5 p.m. The winners meet in the semifinals at 7 p.m. July 18 in Calamus.
