Clinton City council members will meet for a final time today to discuss the city's budget and a proposed emergency tax levy cut that members approved last week.
The proposal issued a cut for $260,161 and threatened to drastically hinder the three departments that make up the majority of the city's general fund: the police department, fire department and the public library.
However, after taking a look at the budget line items, the city has generated enough cuts from elsewhere that it appears the city's services will not suffer to the point originally anticipated.
And by utilizing the general fund surplus, the savings from hiring a city attorney and a reimbursement from the self-supported municipal improvement district, the city's finance department was able to reduce the original emergency levy cut by $125,652 to a total cut needed to the general fund of $134,509.
Those cuts are anticipated to come from a variety of departments, which the Clinton City Council will discuss today and distribute the losses over a wide range of the city's expenditures.
Included in the proposed cuts is $40,783 to close the Clinton Public Library's Lyons Branch, $40,310 in the city attorney's office for a reduction of a full-time administrative specialist, $6,500 from the fire department for a reduction of line items in services and commodities and $5,160 to the police department's services and commodities.
A full list of potential cuts will be discussed at the city's final budget work session at 3 p.m. today at city hall.
