CLINTON — Clinton County will be maintaining more of the roads it shares with the city of Clinton.
County Engineer Todd Kinney told the Board of Supervisors on Monday that there will be a change in how the county handles the road maintenance. The board discussed a memorandum of understanding on the routine maintenance of aggregate roadways in the city’s corporate limits by the county.
Kinney said he was approached by the city with the proposal that county take a larger responsibility in maintaining their roads. According to the memorandum of understanding, the county would maintain nine roadways in the city’s limits.
The county had already been in charge of five of them. The new agreement would add portions of Hart’s Mill Road, South 40th Street, South 54th Street and South 62nd Street. The county would be in charge of the grading of the surface, the placement and spreading of aggregate surfacing material, ditch cleaning and seeding and shoulder shaping. Kinney said these new roads require a lot of ditch and road work.
Kinney estimated that the new agreement would add 10 to 12 miles of road for the county to handle. He said this would be less than a day’s worth of grading.
As part of the agreement, the county would be able to haul its own gravel and be reimbursed by the city. Kinney said they used to have to tell the city they needed gravel and wait to get it. The county would be given a yearly budget for the maintenance.
The agreement also details who is responsible for removing snow and ice from the different roadways. Kinney said there has been very little change.
The board agreed to let the city of Clinton approve the memorandum of understanding first before the county takes action on it.
