---- — CLINTON — A DeWitt teen who admitted to having sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl, could avoid having a felony on his record.

A District Court judge granted Brett Lawson, 18, a deferred judgment for lascivious acts with a child, a class D felony, on Thursday. A charge of third-degree sexual abuse was dismissed.

Lawson admitted on May 30 to having intercourse with a 13-year-old girl in his bedroom last summer, when he was 17 years old. The charge was moved from juvenile court to adult court since Lawson turned 18 in May.

As a class D felony, the charge could carry as much as five years in prison and a fine of between $750 and $7,500. It also includes a special sentence of an additional 10 years of parole after the regular sentence is served.

With his deferred judgment, Lawson must complete three years of probation. He is also required to complete his high school education, enroll in and complete the sex offender treatment plan, comply with GPS monitoring and submit a DNA profile. A $750 civil penalty was suspended.

If Lawson adheres to these requirements the charge will be dismissed.
