GOOSE LAKE — The Northeast middle/high school will include sixth grade students, starting in the 2014-15 school year.
The board of education on Tuesday approved moving the grade.
Elementary School Principal Diane Schumacher expressed concerns regarding over crowding in her school during the June meeting. She projected that 22 classrooms will be needed in the 2014-15 school year. Her building has 21.
Middle/High School Principal Alicia Christiansen has space in her building. She told the board last month that she can keep the middle school and high school separate.
Schumacher and Christiansen also presented data showing that a majority of Iowa elementary schools end in fifth grade. Statistics presented at that meeting show 364 Iowa public elementary schools ending in fifth-grade, with 214 running from pre-kindergarten to fourth grade and 163 ending in sixth grade.
No discussion was held Tuesday before the board approved the change.
