Reaction to Gov. Pat Quinn's Ill. budget address

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Reaction from across Illinois to Gov. Pat Quinn's speech Wednesday on the state budget.

___

"If action is not taken to stabilize our revenue code extreme and radical cuts will be imposed on education and critical public services." — Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn.

___

"Making the record income tax increase permanent is the wrong approach and a piecemeal solution to a much larger problem with outdated tax policy in this state." — Greg Baise, president and CEO of the Illinois Manufacturers' Association.

___

"Governor Quinn laid out in very stark terms the immense fiscal challenges facing Illinois. But this governor is acting responsibly and demonstrating his concern for working families and not allowing them to suffer because of our state's broken budget system." — Keith Kelleher, president of Service Employees International Union, Illinois/Indiana.

___

"After five years of Pat Quinn's failed leadership, we have record tax hikes, outrageously high unemployment, massive cuts in education, and there's still a giant budget mess in Springfield." — Bruce Rauner, Republican candidate for Illinois governor.

___

"Cutting education, sacrificing veteran services and eliminating care for the developmentally disabled is unacceptable. We need to look for responsible alternatives, but I don't think the only thing on the table should be a tax increase." — Illinois state Sen. Tom Cullerton.
