READER'S LETTER: Think before breaking Humane Society contract

CLINTON — The Clinton Humane Society is now, and has been doing, a great job of caring for the needs of the homeless animals in the Clinton area.

They really care about the animals that come to the shelter.

The city of Clinton has been fortunate that the Humane Society has been here to take care of animals. It has been a bargain for the city of Clinton.

We should take a look at what would be involved if the city of Clinton should take over the care of those animals required by law.

First, there would have to be a new, suitable building. That would probably cost about $500,000. To staff the new department in city government you would need a Director at $50,000 to $60,000 plus benefits per year.

Then comes the secretary and treasurer at $40,000 each plus benefits. It would take four to six staff to take care of the animals. Utilities and supplies would run about $50,000 per year.

The Humane Society has been performing a service to the city of Clinton and the surrounding area at a very low cost. They depend heavily on donations from people who care about animals and a small amount from the city. Now they are asking the city to step up to the plate and pay what is deserved for the services provided.

Anyone who thinks that the city can provide the same quality of service as the Humane Society does for the price, I have a bridge across the river I will sell you. Think before you act.
