Sabers sweep Rebels

DEWITT — Central DeWitt came out on top against Northeast as the schools battled in both baseball and softball Tuesday night.

The Sabers opened the baseball game with a three-run first inning, then broke a 3-3 tie in the fifth and added five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 9-3 victory.

“The guys played hard; we just ran out of gas at the end,” Northeast coach Tyler Howe said.

Despite the loss that dropped the Rebels’ record to 16-7, they got some good news when they learned that Bellevue swept a doubleheader from Lisbon 8-5 and 4-2 on Monday. Those results preserved Northeast’s one-game lead in the Big East Conference standings. Northeast (16-7) plays Bellevue on Saturday with a chance to clinch the conference title.

Northeast and Central DeWitt battled for eight innings in the opener of a softball doubleheader, then winning pitcher Brooke Posey drove in Katie Irwin with the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the eighth for a 1-0 victory.

Central DeWitt completed the sweep by scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth in Game 2 to snap a tie and win 5-2.

“Our girls played great defense all night; our pitchers were great and deserved to win tonight,” Northeast coach Travis Eversmeyer said after his team fell to 21-11. “We struggled hitting and especially with runners in scoring position. If we can play that kind of defense, though, we will have a chance to beat anyone in the tournament.”

Northeast’s Aleenah Marcucci tied her own school record by recording her 67th hit of the season.

Camanche girls win

CAMANCHE — Camanche defeated Tipton 10-2 in softball Tuesday in a tuneup for tonight’s home doubleheader against Calamus-Wheatland.

If the Indians sweep the Warriors, they will tie Marquette Catholic for the Big East Conference title.
