CLINTON — The 2013 class of the Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Institute is embarking on an aggressive marketing campaign to inform the community of the abundant events that take place in Clinton and the surrounding areas.
"We want to raise awareness that there are a ton of things to do in this area," 2013 class co-chairman Derek Parker said. "There's this constant, re-occuring theme that there's nothing to do here and we want to change that attitude."
Each year the Chamber hosts the program which runs from the Fall until class members "graduate" in May. The purpose of the Leadership Institute is to identify and develop future community leaders who then take on a local project with the goal of gaining real world leadership experience and enhancing community value.
This year's roughly 10-member class has adopted the theme "places to play that aren't far away." Members are creating a three-page leaflet that details the events in Clinton and the surrounding areas for the month of June. The leaflet will be distributed in May. In addition to the information in the leaflet, it will contain a link to the Clinton Convention and Visitors Bureau website where a digital version of the leaflet will be available with links to more information about the events such as times, costs and other event details.
"We want to keep people here on the weekends instead of traveling to Davenport, Dubuque or Iowa City," Parker said. "When you look at the calendar, there is something going on everyday."
Class members have been calling local businesses and organizations for information about events that have in June in order to include them on the leaflet and the calendar. Parker said the project will benefit the community by drawing attention to the wide variety of events in the area and compiling the information in one central location.
Nate Kreinbrink, the co-chairman of the Leadership Institute with the Chamber, oversees the class progress throughout the year. While this year's class is down slightly from the typical 16-community member size, Kreinbrink said they have been able to collaborate and have a meaningful experience that will positively serve the community.
"They've really pulled together and learned from that," Kreinbrink said. "I think this project will be very beneficial to let not only the community members know about the different events in the area, but the thousands and thousands of people that come here to visit."
Once their June events project is completed, class members hope it will have raised awareness of the local activities and encourage businesses and organizations to continue partnering with the CVB for event promotion.
"The endgame would be for businesses to contact the CVB and let them know about their events so the CVB can include them on its calendar," Parker said.
