BIELEMA: Area heroes are going to be profiled

By Charlene Bielema

---- — As the calendar once again flips to the second week of September, we are reminded of the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Twelve years have passed since that fateful day of death and destruction, when two planes slammed into the World Trade Center’s towers in New York City, another one hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and a fourth crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pa.

When Sept. 11, 2002 rolled around, we at the Herald decided to honor our local firefighters, police officers, ambulance workers and sheriff’s deputies in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by so many in their professions on the day of the attacks.

We published our first “Hometown Heroes” section that year, and have done so each year since, sometimes as one section, other times as individual pages for local departments; the latter is the format we will follow this year.

These pages will begin next week and will feature the Clinton Police Department, Clinton Fire Department, Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and Camanche Fire and Police departments.

The next week will provide the roster for Fulton, Ill., fire and police. Area departments will be featured in the days to follow.

We hope you will take the time to look at this page and see the faces of the many men and women who keep this area’s residents safe day in and day out, whether it be the need to fight a fire or they are summoned to provide medical care.

They truly are our heroes.
