Ranked opponent sweeps Ashford

---- — CLINTON – The Ashford University volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 13-ranked Viterbo on Thursday night inside Kehl Arena. Viterbo won 25-18, 25-20, 25-19.

Junior middle hitter Morgan Martells led the Saints (8-4) with nine kills on 22 attack attempts while Marshalltown native Lauren Lockhart chipped in seven points.

Junior Sarah Garvick paced the Saints with 19 digs, and freshman Verenice Chaparro led the team in assists with 13.

On the defensive front, Ashford aided its cause with 10 team blocks, including three from Danielle Tombolato and two solo blocks from Martells.

Outside hitter Alicia Olson put down 15 kills to lead the V-Hawks (12-2).

Ashford returns to action inside Kehl Arena tonight when the team hosts the opening day of the Saints Invitational. AU opens pool play at 1 p.m. against Robert Morris (Ill.) and ends action at 7:30 p.m. against UM-Dearborn.
