The city of Clinton is on the path of getting out of the white good disposal business after councilmen agreed Tuesday night that the city is unable to cover the program’s cost.
Currently, the city sells a white good sticker to residents, with that sticker placed on the item to be disposed.
The cost of the sticker is set at $10 and is the actual cost the city pays to dispose of the item at the Clinton County Area Solid Waste Agency.
But while it appears the city is breaking even on each transport, that is not the case.
That’s because the hourly rate for a city equipment operator is $29.67 in fiscal year 2014. Between having two employees pick up an appliance and drop it off with an assumed time frame of 30 minutes at the solid waste agency, city equipment use and the cost of fuel, the city would have to charge $48.67 per sticker in order to recoup the city’s cost.
Clinton City Finance Director Jessica Kinser told the City Council at its Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday night that the city could either choose to raise the sticker price, or eliminate the service altogether.
The city unanimously chose to get out of the business, with that decision to be forwarded on to the City Council agenda for action.
The council is encouraging haulers who will do such work to leave their business cards at city hall so residents can be referred to them when seeking such services.
