Rough day for Ashford

Special to the Herald

TUCSON, Ariz. — On a day when offense proved to be at a premium, the Ashford University softball team suffered a pair of defeats Tuesday at the Tucson Invitational Games.

The Saints fell 4-1 to No. 12 Olivet Nazarene in the opener before suffering a walk-off, 3-2 defeat to Calumet College of St. Joseph.

Freshman Brianna De La Rosa led the Saints (8-7) with two runs driven in, while sophomore Kalyn Ohle-meyer had three hits.

The big blow in the opener came in the top of the third inning, when ONU's Hannah Gardner came through with a bases-loaded triple to right-center field off Ashford starter Nicole Schmidt.

AU plated its lone run in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Heidi Riley picked up her fifth RBI with a double to the left-center gap, scoring Kara Christensen.

De La Rosa’s two-run double put the Saints ahead 2-0 in the first inning of Game 2, but Calumet took advantage of a pair of Ashford errors to even things up at 2 in the third. Lauren Johnson singled in the winning run to end it in the seventh.

Baseball team falls

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — For the second consecutive day, the Ashford baseball team was halted by tough opposing pitching in a 10-1 loss to The Master's College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints (5-6) had just three hits against five Mustangs pitchers.

With the Mustangs (18-7) leading 1-0 in the top of the second inning, AU lit the scoreboard with a run when designated hitter Ryan Fraley led off with a solo home run to left field.

However, the home squad regained the lead with three runs in the third before notching a run in the sixth, two in the seventh and three more in the eighth.

Starting pitcher Ty Funke took the loss for the Saints, allowing nine hits and five earned runs over 5 2/3 innings.
