Letter to the Editor
I have been watching the news, reading the letters to editor etc. about the situations in Clinton.
And I just had to respond to some of the negativeness that seems to have over-taken our town.
First, was the letter to editor from one of our Council members calling out Mayor Vulich and saying some horrible things about him and decisions he had made. Then came the next letter to the editor from a Clinton Humane Society member calling out again, Mayor Vulich and also council members Paul Gassman, Bev Hermann and Maggie Klaes saying they are a disgrace to our community and that this person was stunned and sickened by their irresponsible and childish actions concerning the Clinton Humane Society.
I do not always agree with everything the Mayor and Council have made choices on, but I think this is really sad that people act like they are in grade school and revert to name calling. I happen to know most of these people personally and I would like to say they are at least trying to do something for our city. You cannot afford to give the Human Society twice as much money this year as in past years with our budget as bad as it is.
Why can’t we at least give the Humane Society what we have in the past and help keep it going as I believe there is a need for this in our community now more than ever with the tough times. I love animals and have three of my own, but I still do not think we can put the animals above human safety. We do not have enough money to hire enough police officers or keep our city workers and now we are in danger of losing the YWCA women’s shelter which is so needed. When our officers get eight to 10 domestic calls a day, these are things we cannot be without.
People are always so ready to judge our Mayor and Council, but very few are willing to try to do anything to help make it better. It is easier to sit back and complain than to try to make a difference. I found this out firsthand when I was asking people to go the council meetings to save our police, fire and city workers jobs.
Do not complain about what they do unless you want to be a part of the solution. These people live in our community and they deserve our respect and support. If you don’t agree to do this the correct way, by going to the meetings not name calling in the paper and saying nasty things to the news media about things, please do not make comments at all.
We want new industry to come to our town. Why would anyone in their right mind really want to? So many people that live here now are talking about selling their homes and moving out of Clinton due to rates on so many things rising and not enough police officers and now the issues with the Humane Society. Our family for one is on a fixed income and with the increase in sewer, garbage etc., it is really hard to make ends meet. I feel that the respectable people of Clinton that pay their bills etc. are the ones that are getting the shaft. We have to pay more because others do not pay their bills. That is really unfair.
But there are only so many ways you can collect from people. I do like it that people that are behind in their sewer bills are having it taken out of their state taxes. Hopefully, this will help some. I also believe that we need to find a way for the large apartment complexes to get current on their sewer etc. Maybe then the rest of us would not have to absorb so much of the burden.
So please everyone, let’s see what we can do together by working together as the body of Clinton and making this the kind of town we want it to be, that we are proud to call our home.
