DES MOINES — Gov. Terry Branstad says comments made by Congressman Bruce Braley about Sen. Charles Grassley's ability to lead the judiciary committee have damaged Braley's U.S. Senate campaign.
Braley apologized to Grassley on Tuesday after video of Braley's comments at a Texas fundraiser in January were released.
The video shows Braley, a Democrat, telling a group of lawyers that if they didn't support him and Republicans gained a Senate majority, Grassley would become judiciary chairman. Braley described Grassley as "a farmer from Iowa who never went to law school, never practiced law."
Branstad, like Grassley a Republican, on Wednesday called such a description of Grassley "unbelievable."
He says the comments won't be forgotten and will damage Braley.
Grassley often notes he's is the only non-lawyer on the panel, which oversees judicial nominations.
