CLINTON — Residents can soon expect a new housing development in Clinton, as the West Heights Townhomes project begins to finalize construction in the next month.
According to Community Housing Initiative’s (CHI) communications and marketing director Matt Miller, construction on the 30-unit apartment complex should be complete by Nov. 30.
“We are beginning to market to the local providers in town and we are taking applications that can be found on the CHI website,” Miller said.
Applications for the 26 three-bedroom units and the four, four-bedroom units, will require a $15 application fee and have specific income prerequisites for all tenants.
The income limits vary by the number of people in the household and by percent of area median income (AMI) in the household.
For example: a single resident at 40 percent of the AMI cannot exceed $17,480 in yearly income; two people in the household at 40 percent AMI cannot exceed $20,000; three people in the home at 40 percent AMI cannot exceed $22,480, and so forth.
As the number of residents in the household increases and the AMI percentage rises, so does the income limit.
These income limits are designed to provide affordable housing for families and people with disability, who are on a fixed income.
“Currently we have three apartment complexes there, in the city of Clinton,” Miller said. “(But) this is the first one designed specifically for families and people with disability in Clinton.”
Each of the 30 units will come equipped with a refrigerator, stove, washing machine and dryer, microwave, dishwasher and garbage disposal.
Additional amenities include handicapped accessible units, central air with individual furnace and air conditioner control, individual water heater, window treatments and a playground.
CHI will celebrate with Clinton city officials with a grand opening ribbon cutting once construction is completed on the West Heights complex, but with winter slowly creeping in, an official date has not been set.
“There will be a grand opening in December but it’s not scheduled yet with the city,” Miller said. “I’m not sure on that. I think they’re still planning that based on construction but it’s coming along.”
Once construction is completed, Miller anticipates the 30 units will rent out quickly because of the developing need for affordable housing in the community.
“A lot of good things are going on in the city of Clinton,” Miller said. “Housing is needed out there.”
