VALDOSTA, Ga. — A freshman was found dead inside a study area not far from her college dorm room, where classmates presumed she had fallen asleep.
Fellow students discovered Jasmine Cathleen Benjamin, 17, on a couch inside Valdosta State University's Georgia Hall dormitory about 12:30 p.m., Sunday. They tried to wake her, then tried reviving her with CPR.
Several students reported seeing Benjamin on the couch in the fifth-floor study hall about 12 hours earlier, at midnight Saturday. They assumed she was asleep.
Steven Turner, an agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, said authorities are investigating all possible causes of death. The Lowndes County coroner said his autopsy is incomplete, pending the results of toxicology tests.
Benjamin began attending college this past fall. She was from Lawrenceville, Ga., northeast of Atlanta.
About 12,500 students attend Valdosta State, in this city 15 miles north of the Georgia/Florida border.
