American Red Cross to honor Clinton student for saving his father’s life

CLINTON — The American Red Cross will bestow its highest national award, the National Certificate of Merit, on a Clinton High School student who saved his father’s life.

Josh Hill will be presented with this award during the Boys Swimming Awards Night at Clinton High School at 6:45 p.m. Monday.

On Aug. 26, Hill heard a strange gurgling sound coming from his parents’ bedroom. He ran to the room and found his father, David, unconscious and not breathing. Using his Red Cross training, Josh immediately called emergency medical services and began administering CPR. He continued administering life sustaining CPR to his father until paramedics could arrive and transport. Without a doubt, the skills learned in the American Red Cross Health and Safety Services Course and used by Hill contributed to saving the life of his father, Red Cross officials state.

He completed American Red Cross CPR/AED training in May 2012 through his employer, the YWCA of Clinton.

The Certificate of Merit is the highest award bestowed by the Red Cross and bears the signature of the President of the United States. It is awarded to a nominated individual who saves or sustains a human life and successfully completes a Red Cross course in first aid, CPR/AED or aquatics prior to the performance of the lifesaving or life-sustaining act.
