  • Librarians with computers are remarkable
    I’m here with an update on Najwa bin Laden’s book.
    I should have known that the Vigo County Public Library could find the information for me. Anyway, Laura Mitchell from the Reference Department of VCPL located it and sent it via e-mail. I now know the name of the book, Najwa’s co-author (it’s the boy, Omar), the name of the translator and the date of publication. I don’t know if the library owns a copy, but if not they would get me a copy through interlibrary loan.
  • Ms.Takes: Columbus is worth celebrating
    Now they’re trashing Christopher Columbus! Schools are taking him out of his historic context and making him a bad guy.

    What did they mean I needed cataract surgery?
  • Ms.Takes: I’m wondering what the bin Ladens saw in Indiana
    Have I got a book for you!
    The problem is that I don’t know the name of it, when it was published, or where you might buy or borrow a copy. The attraction is that it offers a tourist’s impression of Indiana from a point of view we aren’t apt to get anywhere else.
  • MS. TAKES: Missing brother Ed
    Someone asked the other day why I hadn’t written about my brother, Ed, lately.
  • Ms. Takes: Cat abuse at the hands of a human rat
    It’s a long story, but when I was a kid we once ended up with 14 cats.
  • Ms. Takes: Grandma was a woman ahead of her time
    I don’t remember Grandma voting. Of course she would not have been allowed to vote until after August 1920, but knowing her, I’ll bet she was first in the door when the polls opened.
  • Ms.Takes: For some Betsy Wetsy bests Barbie
    I understand that Barbie’s 50th birthday falls sometime this September. Barbie who? Well, Barbie Doll, of course. I’m not sure of her last name, it’s probably Mattel or Megabucks.
  • Ms.Takes: A few fond memories of back to school
    Once upon a time, the first day of a new school year was the day after Labor Day.
