Metro roundup: Pairings set for girls’ HI-99/TH Savings Bank Classic

Pairings for the ninth annual HI-99/Terre Haute Savings Bank Classic for girls high school basketball were drawn Monday at the Terre Haute Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Three-time defending champion Terre Haute South, which has won five of the eight previous tournaments, plays the opening game Nov. 11 against South Vermillion, with Northview and Terre Haute North meeting in the second game that night.

On Nov. 12 Fountain Central, last year’s runner-up, plays North Central in the first game and Owen Valley, a potential tournament favorite, meets West Vigo in the second contest.

First-round losers meet in a doubleheader Nov. 13, while semifinals are the morning of Nov. 14 with the championship game at 6:30 p.m. that day.

Tournament passes for $12 each as well as individual-session tickets will be available at the door each night. A portion of the proceeds goes to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.



Football

• Casey native honored — Defensive back Nick Murphy of Casey, Ill., is being honored today by the Exchange Club of Terre Haute after helping Rose-Hulman’s defense rise to the occasion during last Saturday’s 50-14 victory at Bluffton. He will receive the club’s Athlete of the Week Award during today’s luncheon meeting at the Holiday Inn.

Murphy had a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown, helping the Engineers score 23 first-quarter points in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory. He also had two pass breakups and one solo tackle in the game.

For the season, Murphy leads Rose-Hulman in pass interceptions (2) and pass breakups (8) and has had 22 tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage for eight yards in losses.

A three-year starter, Murphy will join Rose-Hulman’s other senior players in being recognized before Saturday’s final home game against Franklin at 1:30 p.m. on Phil Brown Field. The Engineers bring a 4-4 overall record and 2-3 HCAC mark into the Dad’s Day game.



Golf

• Farris, Smith teams win — At Brazil, teams headed by Troy Farris and Brian Smith were winners in a backward scramble played Sunday at Forest Park.

Farris, Larry Thompson and Bill Lovett shot 61 to take gross honors while Smith, Jerry Lents and Dean Cook had 70 for the Peoria title.

A backward scramble will be played Sunday at Hulman Links and a two-man scramble is slated Nov. 8 at Geneva Hills.



Gross division

Basketball

• Middle school season begins — The following results were reported from Vigo County middle school games.



Eighth-grade boys — Woodrow Wilson 48 (Chris Barrett 23, Jacob Johnson 16), Sarah Scott 27 (Wesley 7, Dobbins 7).



Racing

• Lawson, Wilson win — Jeremy Lawson and Mike Wilson were two winners in Crossroads Dragway action Sunday.

Lawson won in super pro class and Wilson took honors in pro class, while Nathan Smith prevailed in sportsman class. Jabin McCarty was the winner in the high school finals.

Fun Night runs are slated Friday with the final points race set for Saturday followed by a Halloween bash and racer’s picnic. Time runs are at 11 a.m. with eliminations at 2 p.m.

• Racing reset — At Putnamville, Racin’ Fest was called off due to wet grounds last week and has been rescheduled for Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway.

Hot laps are at 1 p.m. with an autograph session scheduled from 5 to 6. Racing is set for sprint cars, super stocks, modifieds and bomber cars.



Soccer

• U13 girls complete unbeaten season — The Terre Haute Flyers U13 girls wrapped up their season with a 3-1 victory against Fusion at Avon over the weekend. The team was 7-0-1, winning the Greater Indiana Regional League.
