Pioneer Village provided great experience

We visited the settlers at Pioneer Village in Fowler Park on Oct. 3 and 4, 2009. The weather was pretty cool and most of the time cabins had a fire in their fireplace. Many activities were under way. The church was a happy place. There was a lot of singing and visiting. The children had a school lesson there, on Geography — east of Ohio is fertile land and north, the tract called Michigan, Illinois is the state that’s on the west south of Kentucky and Indiana is the best. The children also learned some arithmetic twice are two — this book is something new. Twice two are four — pray hasten or before. Twice three are six — you’re always playing tricks. In the Peker cabin some of the ladies were cooking a delicious meal. Another lady was sitting outside churning butter.

There was a couple just east of this cabin working on flax. Grown in Indiana, flax is beat on and then it is spun on a spinning wheel after it is finished it is woven into fine linen towels and sheets.

Rope making was demonstrated close to another cabin. The mill was very active where corn meal is made.

We were glad for all the volunteers who shared their different skills and were part of a wonderful day at Fowler Park. The Donald Folz Cabin will be at Fowler Park soon.

Next time, it could be an emergency

While hunting at just about 400 yards from my house, I shot a big deer. Too big for a 61-year-old man to move, I tried to use my cell phone but couldn’t because we do not have a phone tower close enough in our area (West Sutliff Drive).

Just a few years ago, a friend of mine tried to get a tower on his property, but it was stopped by the planning commission. This has been an ongoing issue in our area for years.

We need help!

Wake-up call for America

Jihad (Islamic holy war against non-Muslims) is making headlines around the world. To help educate Americans about Jihad, Zuhdi Jasser, a moderate Muslim and patriotic American, has produced a movie that is now available on DVD: “The Third Jihad: Radical Islam’s Vision for America.” (www.thethirdjihad.com).

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has called this movie “A wake-up call for America.”
