Kegler's Korner: Scamihorn still a force around lanes

By Dennis Clark
The Tribune-Star

Jay Scamihorn has been a frequent high scorer in senior — that’s older folks! — leagues in recent years, frequently recognized for high game or high series (usually both).

But he can also dominate in the mainstream of bowling too.

Scamihorn averaged 234.1 for high average to lead his four-man team to a victory in the 19th Shootout at the Terre Haute Bowling Center on Oct. 24-25. His teammates were John McWilliams, Mike Gambill and Tom Bowker.

The teams captained by Dave Paulin, Guy Johnson and Doug Weaver placed second-to-fourth in this A-B-C-D format tournament. A total of 12 teams competed this year.

Other top individuals were Josh Snowden (second in average at 233.1), while Phil Huynh and Clint Woods shared high game honors with 290.

In other tournament news:

• The 700 Club’s 5-man Baker Team event was at Paradise Bowl in Clinton on Oct. 4. Winning team was Bryan Barton, Brian Taylor, Ryan Nichols, Marc Pruett and Tom Brown. Second place team was Jeff Saleh, Doug Weaver, Darrell Davis, Guy Johnson and Scott Hill.

• Ryan Nichols edged Bob Lovvron 258-256 in the championship match of the 700 Club Singles Tournament at the Bowling Center on Nov. 1. The remaining top five included Trey Minett (third), Tom Brown (fourth) and Taylor (fifth). A small of field of 19 bowlers competed.

• Sean Pepper rolled a five-game score of 1,194 (238.8 average) to win the Bowling Center’s first Cheaper Sweeper event of the season on Oct. 17. Gary Busiere finished second (1,166) and Snowden (1,152) was third. A total of 18 bowlers competed.

Upcoming tournaments:

• 600 Club Women’s Singles is 1 p.m. today at the Bowling Center.

• Cheaper Sweeper returns to the Bowling Center at 1 p.m. on Nov. 21. Entry fee is $25.

• Team Shootout, with A-B-C-D format, will be at Vigo Bowl on Nov. 21-22. Times are 1 p.m. on Nov. 21, noon on Nov. 22. Entry fee is $70.

• Who’s hot? — It’s interesting to see who the top bowlers are in the weekly league results. Granted, not all the results reported to the Tribune-Star are computer generated, so all bowlers can’t be recognized.

With that disclaimer duly noted, the following are just some of the “hot” bowlers in the Terre Haute area at the end of October.

Vigo Bowl — Top adult males include Jason Hiddle (217/Eagles Mixed League), Rufus Pace (214/Bell Welding), Chris Salyer (213/Monday Mixed Bush), Doug Smith (210/Bell Welding) and Lonnie Pharris (209/Eagles Mixed).

Top adult females include Crystal Sullivan (216/Eagles Mixed) and Ashley Wills (191/Mic’s Pics).

Top juniors include boys Eli Perry (205/Wednesday Youth), Steven Wright (196/Seniors) and Tyler Lawrence (194/Seniors). Leading girls are Sara Shepherd and Amanda Perry (both 172/both Wednesday Youth).

THBC — Top adult males include Scott Johnson (231/Russ Fisher Truck Parts), Scamihorn (228/Monday Prime Timers; also 218/Wednesday Prime Timers), Mike Zebrowski (226/Monday Prime Timers), Guy Johnson (226/Guarantee Roofing; also 225/Russ Fisher Truck Parts), Brian Taylor (225/Guarantee Roofing), Lovvron (220/Savannah’s Trophy House), Matt Lugar (216/Savannah’s Trophy House), Shane Mullenix (211/ANG Mixed) and Albert Mayes (204/ANG Mixed).

Top adult females include Melissa Dressler (196/Savannah’s Trophy House), Jodi Moan (193/ANG Mixed) and Carol Davis (183/Nancy’s Song Bird Karaoke).

Top juniors include boys Cameron Bolinger (217/Juniors), Austin Dowell (210/Juniors) and girl Mack Pepper (181/Juniors).

n Karen Prettyman has led the Savannah’s Trophy House league at Vigo Bowl in high game and high series much of the season, even rolling a 300 game a few weeks back.

• Special event — The first Josh Combs Adult/Youth Scholarship Tournament will be at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Bowling Center. Combs, a former junior bowler at the Bowling Center, died tragically at the age of 10 in July. He was the son of Marty and Shellie Combs.

Entry fee is $24 for both adult and youth bowlers. There are several door prizes to be awarded, along with scholarships to the youth bowlers competing. Josh’s parents will be bowling in the event.

“This is a fun day to honor the memory of Josh Combs and give out scholarship money in his name,” explained THBC manager Phil Cooper.

Entry forms are available at the Bowling Center. For more information, call (812) 238-2911.
