Amey Takes Aim: Mashall’s pride was roaring during unforgettable run

Only 29 seconds remained Saturday afternoon when Marshall’s Lions finally realized their 11-game high school football winning streak had come to an end. Taylor Duncan’s fourth-down pass had fallen incomplete, visiting Maroa-Forsyth had the ball — and a 17-point lead — and the Lions’ offensive unit trooped dejectedly off the field.

It’s been a high school football season Mike Stiener would have loved. Probably the toughest kid in my class at Center Grade School and Lowell High School — or at least he would have tried to convince you he was the toughest — Mike was our team MVP in football our senior year as a 130-pound guard and middle linebacker (I was in the running for LVP, but that’s another story), flew supplies into the Middle East during the first Gulf War, and is currently the pastor of a little church in the hills of northern California.

Let me be the first to say that I should have been on this bandwagon a lot sooner; 15 years ago or so, in fact. Considering what I do for a living, I could have been a lot more vocal and enthusiastic when the decision was made back then to offer athletic scholarships at St. Mary-of-the-Woods. I wasn’t opposed to the idea, and calling me skeptical would have even been a little too strong. But I guess I just kind of shrugged and said, “Oh well.” So long as it didn’t affect Sunday brunch, I was OK with it.

It’s another big week for sports in the area. High school and college basketball teams begin the season while Indiana State plays its final football game of the season. And three high school football teams still are alive in the postseason in Indiana and Illinois.

Rub of the Green: Course architect Pete Dye has had lasting impression on game

It would seem that the more you learn about Pete Dye, the golf course architect, the more there is to admire about the man. It was decades ago when Dye determined that the insurance business was not for him, and he decided to begin designing golf courses. Even Pete, himself, in all likelihood, couldn’t have known the impact he was going to make on the golf world.

Isn’t it about time for the Rockville-Linton high school football game? And can you have too many games between Casey and Marshall? Both those scenarios could be a little more than a week away, provided the four teams take care of playoff business Friday and Saturday.
