RELIGION IN BRIEF | Spring Meadow plans to honor pastor, wife

Spring Meadow Family Worship Center, Route 56, Fishertown, will honor Pastor Gary Boor, and his wife, Jean, during the 10:30 a.m. Sunday worship service.

The Boors have served the center for the past 15 years.

A meal will follow the service in the Family Life Center.

Ebensburg church schedules activities

The annual ThankOffering service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday at Ebensburg Presbyterian Church, 200 N. Center St.

Christine B. Fuller will speak.

She participated in the 2008 Presbyterian Women Global Exchange to the Czech Republic, Hungary, Carpath-Ukraine and Russia.

A time of fellowship will follow.

The church also will hold a jazzy evening of praise and prayers at 7:30 Sunday.

Featured artists will be vocalist Mariah Seymour, a senior at Central Cambria High School; trumpeter Walt McClelland, a regularly featured soloist with Jazz in Your Face; and bassist Nathan Santos, co-director of the music ministry at Westmont Presbyterian Church.

Jazz musicians from the church are Fremont McKenrick on keyboards and Dave Moorhead on clarinet and saxophone, along with Kurt Kretchman on drums.

McKenrick has served as organist at Ebensburg Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years, organist for Johns-town hockey games and has played piano with Jazz in Your Face.

Kaufman Mennonite holding movie night

“End of the Spear” will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Kaufman Mennonite Church, 916 Miller Picking Road, Davidsville.

The movie, rated PG-13, tells the true story of Nate Saint and his dedication to the violent and isolated Waodoni tribe of Ecuador.

Child care and activities will be provided.

Hymn sing Sunday at Nanty Glo church

An old-fashioned hymn sing will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 995 Second St., Nanty Glo.

Light refreshments will be provided following the hymn sing.

Grace Lutheran to host hymn sing

The churches of the West End will hold a hymn sing at 7 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church, 246 Chandler Ave., Johnstown.

A social time with refreshments will follow.

First UM holding restoration benefit

First United Methodist Church will hold a restoration fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Five Guys Restaurant, 145 Town Center Drive, Richland Township.

When ordering, mention First United Methodist Church and 20 percent of the bill will be donated to the restoration fund.

The church, located at 436 Vine St., Johnstown, also will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays for prayer and reflection.

The Rev. Dennis Zimmerman will lead a study on prayer techniques from noon to 12:30 p.m.

Council to note World Community Day

Johnstown Council, Church Women United, will celebrate World Community Day at 1 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church, 309 Lincoln St., Johnstown.

The theme, “Piecing Earth Together,” focuses on the environment and the calling to work together to be good stewards of the gifts of the earth.

Registration will begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by a luncheon at noon.

V. Gwynne Fetsko, president of Church Women United, will welcome the attendees.

The Rev. Alice Plotts, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, will give the “Reflection.” 

Nancy Hoover will be the pianist.
