Trojans win 6-AAA title over Hollidaysburg

This time, Johnstown would not be denied. The Trojans (8-3) built an early lead then held off a second-half Hollidaysburg rally to capture the District 6 Class AAA football championship Friday night at Mansion Park, unseating the defending champion Golden Tigers 21-14.“It’s a great feeling,” said Johnstown coach Kevin Marabito, whose team had fallen to Hollidaysburg in last year’s title tilt. “These kids worked so hard. They deserved what they got. That’s what this year is all about. A championship drive comes down to that last drive and our kids sucked it up and our defense stepped in as it has all year and they stepped in at the last minute and stopped them.”

In the moments after Scott Thomas missed an extra point on Conemaugh Township’s first touchdown in Friday’s District 5 Class A championship game, Indians coach Sam Zambanini approached the senior placekicker.“I told him to keep his head up because we might need him,” Zambanini said after Thomas squeezed a 19-yard field goal just inside the far upright with 5 seconds left in the Indians’ 21-20 comeback win over defending champion Windber.“I never envisioned at that point we would need him in that way,” Zambanini said. “He sure came through in a big way.”

Roethlisberger keeps arm under wraps

The last time Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had a passer rating like the one he had Sunday in the 18-12 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, he bounced back with a razor-sharp performance against the San Diego Chargers in last season’s playoffs.“He’s been outstanding in bouncing back,” said his offensive coordinator, Bruce Arians. That’s been the case – at least when Roethlisberger’s healthy. There are questions today about his health after he sat out parts of Thursday’s practice with a wrapped right elbow.
