Trojans win 6-AAA title over Hollidaysburg

This time, Johnstown would not be denied.
The Trojans (8-3) built an early lead then held off a second-half Hollidaysburg rally to capture the District 6 Class AAA football championship Friday night at Mansion Park, unseating the defending champion Golden Tigers 21-14.
“It’s a great feeling,” said Johnstown coach Kevin Marabito, whose team had fallen to Hollidaysburg in last year’s title tilt. “These kids worked so hard. They deserved what they got. That’s what this year is all about. A championship drive comes down to that last drive and our kids sucked it up and our defense stepped in as it has all year and they stepped in at the last minute and stopped them.”

  • Late field goal gives Indians District 5 crown
In the moments after Scott Thomas missed an extra point on Conemaugh Township’s first touchdown in Friday’s District 5 Class A championship game, Indians coach Sam Zambanini approached the senior placekicker.
“I told him to keep his head up because we might need him,” Zambanini said after Thomas squeezed a 19-yard field goal just inside the far upright with 5 seconds left in the Indians’ 21-20 comeback win over defending champion Windber.
“I never envisioned at that point we would need him in that way,” Zambanini said. “He sure came through in a big way.”

  • Top-seed Rangers advance in 6-AA
The undefeated Forest Hills Rangers are playing for another District 6-AA title.
The Rangers took advantage of some key turnovers by Richland, and Nick Dudukovich put together an outstanding rushing performance with 260 yards on 29 carries, scoring three touchdowns, as the Rangers overwhelmed the Rams, 32-7.

  • Crushers cruise to final
A record-setting standout performance by senior running back Josh Seidel propelled Bishop McCort to a berth in next week’s District 6-A championship game as the unbeaten Crimson Crushers defeated visiting Penns Manor 45-21 Friday night at Point Stadium.

  • Bisons extend their year with big win
Bedford scored early Friday and never relinquished that lead to keep its postseason hopes alive with a 29-6 victory over Westinghouse in a PIAA sub-regional playoff game at Cupples Stadium.

  • Checkers, Schepke top Chiefs
The Johnstown Chiefs were defeated by the Charlotte Checkers 7-4 on Friday evening at the Time Warner Cable Arena to begin their three-game southern road trip.

  • Cats open season with victory
Ryan Link’s technical fall to start the match helped No. 10-ranked Pitt-Johnstown build a 12-0 lead after three matches en route to a 27-12 season-opening victory over No. 16 West Liberty University on Friday. UPJ is now 1-0.

  • Unbeatens to clash in D-6 semifinal
Two area juggernauts will meet tonight in a much-anticipated District 6 Class A semifinal.
Second-seeded Bellwood-Antis (10-0) will host third-seeded Portage (10-0) in a battle of undefeated squads that is expected to be played in front of a packed house.
