Abortion Holocaust

Dear editor,

Letters to the editor are a fascinating component of the paper because they present a microcosm of the public thought process in Parker County. However, there is on occasion a letter that is so unbelievably wrong that one has to wonder where the author gets his information.

For example, take the “Abortion Holocaust” letter that predicts economic decline for the United States if abortion remains legal. Countries south of the United States where abortion is illegal have the most backwater economies in our hemisphere. The country that has one of the fastest growing economies in the world is China, where abortion is not only legal, but where the government, has for years, made it mandatory.

However, the right of a human being to “own” his or her body should not be debated over the state of the economy.

Since most conservatives seem willing to concede control of the wombs of female citizens to the government, then logically they must also be willing to concede control of male scrotums to that same government. A pregnant woman has an abortion because she does not want to be pregnant, but it is an aroused male who is responsible for her pregnancy.

Making abortion illegal criminalises the victim, not the perpetrator. If conservatives are serious about eliminating abortions, they will push for a law to castrate every male who is responsible for a pregnancy that ends in abortion. Thus, there will be no repeat offenders and there will be a significant deterrent to irresponsible male behavior.

Calling all Girl Scouts!

Dear editor,

I’ve seen a lot of things come and go in Weatherford in the 26 years I’ve lived here, but none makes me more sad than the loss of Girl Scout Camp Holland.

When I look at the history, the memories and great benefit so many girls have received in their time spent at Camp Holland, I realize what a great loss it will be to this community.

At one time we belonged to the Heart of Texas GS Council based in Brownwood. They built a pool they could not afford according to the treasurer at the annual meeting. They immediately began channeling all activities and money into Brownwood and Camp Holland was neglected.

I suppose because of finances, the Heart of Texas GS Council no longer exists. Now we’re under the Oklahoma Plains Council. This council says Camp Holland is in need of repairs and (since the city built a new park down the street) difficult to secure. They have shut off the utilities and have no plans of reopening Camp Holland.

Those beautiful rock cabins were built by the WPA workgroups during the depression era. The city blocked the road for over a year. It hurt us not being able to use our camp. This past summer was the lowest attendance I have ever seen for day camp. I see no recruitment going on in our schools. I am afraid all these circumstances combined mean Girl Scouts in Parker County are gone.

Are their any old Girls Scouts out there that feel as I do? Are their any saviors for the girls of Parker County? Does Camp Holland, the squirrel, the singing tree, the Leaders Lodge and the beautiful trails and memories mean anything to anyone else? Help! I would love to hear from you, bssmiley@yahoo.com.

Is it too late?

Dear editor,

What is happening to our country? Do we need to fight for our liberty and fend off tyranny again? I know that sounds dramatic, but so are these words — I feel betrayed by government and I speak for family, friends and co-workers.

For years we had checks and balances in place to protect citizens from overzealous federal regulation, but even IGs within the system have been corrupted or fired.

Now with the media playing lapdog for this administration, we are in deep trouble. The double standard and hypocrisy is laughable; imagine the reaction from the liberal media if President Bush had appointed a “Czar” who was an ex-con and avowed communist!

But, it is refreshing to know our president has respect on the world stage, from Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Khadafy and most of the world’s tin horn dictators and despots. Maybe that is why he turned his back on our new found friends and allies in Poland and the Czech Republic. They have tasted freedom and are embracing it after living under years of Russian tyranny.

If the mindless ideologs in Washington cannot see or feel the anger bubbling up from “we the people,” they are either stupid or do not care. I believe it is the latter.

The majority of Americans understand the uniqueness of this country, the freedom, values and traditions we hold to dearly. Generations of patriots fought and died to keep them!

We are not like the rest of the world and don’t care to be governed under one world order. The UN is a joke and everyone knows it. Despite what Obama says, this is a Christian nation founded on solid principles, so we have to stand firm if this nation is to survive as we know it for the next three years.
