Following some bad weather this past spring, the Millsap Community Center received a new metal roof, but insurance did not cover the entire cost of the project. Now the community is pulling together to cover the additional costs.
A benefit garage sale to raise funds for the center is set to start at 7:30 am. Saturday at the center, located at 104 Fannin St.
The community center has served the Millsap area since the late 1960s and is used for youth events, family events, voting and club meetings.
The only funds raised to support the up keep of the old barrack building is through renting it for these events. The center rents for $25 for half a day and $50 for a full day.
If enough money is not raised to cover the $4,000 bill for the roof, JoAnn Barnhart said the rental prices may have to increase.
“They haven’t gone up in a while,” she said. “They need to go up, but we don’t want to. If we can make enough money on this sale we won’t have to.”
She said the officers who oversee the center held a fundraiser earlier this year to cover the cost of a new refrigerator, but other than that, have not held a fundraiser in several years.
“We’ve just been clicking along with rent to keep us going,” she said.
While insurance covered part of the cost of the roof, it would not cover it in full since it was metal.
“We stepped out there on faith putting on the metal roof,” Barnhart said. “We didn’t have to, but it was more durable.”
Barnhart has been collecting items for the sale over the past several months and is still picking up items for Saturday’s sale.
Tuesday she said the building was being used for the election and has already been booked up for Christmas including a Christmas program to be held the first Saturday night in December.
“I’m still proud of the metal roof, and I think we did the right thing,” she said. “We patched and patched on the other one. This time it was big time [damage], so it was time to replace it.”
Saturday’s benefit sale will also include a taco soup lunch with pecan pie.
