After receiving nearly 18,000 votes, American State Bank gave away $10,000 to local charities Thursday including Parker Paws, The Texas Pythian home and the Parker County Center of Hope.

The give away was part of the bank’s “Giving Back to Weatherford” campaign. Non-profit organizations submitted applications to participate in the give away and the community then voted online or at the bank for who they wanted to receive the money.

The Pythian Home and Center of Hope came in second and third, respectively, and each received $2,500. First place went to Parker Paws who received a $5,000 check from American State Bank.

Kathy McDowell, American State Bank marketing, said in this economy it’s hard for people to donate to non-profits and the banks wanted to do what they could for the community.

Parker Paws works with the Parker County Animal Shelter to increase pet adoptions. They maintain local information on the Petfinder.com site, provide animal welfare education to the public and help raise funds for the shelter. Money from the give back will assist Parker Paws with their fostering program where animals are temporarily placed with foster families and to purchase supplies for the animal shelter.

The Pythian Home provides a stable environment for children to grow up and become responsible adults. They will use the money towards the purchase of a new playground for the home.

Center of Hope is a Christian-centered ministry dedicated to reversing the cycle of poverty in Parker County. They assist families in need by supplying groceries and paying utility bills.

Weatherford Branch Manager Wade Julian presented the checks to each recipient.
