DAVENPORT — Donald L. “Don” Pruess, 82, of Davenport and formerly of Cedar Rapids and Clarence, died Monday, March 23, 2009, at the Clarissa Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf, Iowa.

He was born March 22, 1927, in Clarence, Iowa, to Wilfred Pruess and Elsie Amend. He married Margaret Patricia “Pat” Lannert on July 7, 1951 in Skokie, Illinois.

A celebration of life Mass will be held at St. Joseph Church, DeWitt, at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, March 26, at Chapman Funeral Home, Clarence and from 9:30 a.m. until the service time at the church on Friday. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral service with burial at St. John’s Cemetery in Clarence at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Clarissa Cook Hospice House or American Legion Post #286, Clarence.

Don graduated from Clarence High School in 1944 and served in the U.S. Navy in 1945-46. He was proud to have served at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital, helping wounded soldiers returning from overseas. He was a proud member of the American Legion for over 60 years. Don and Pat raised 4 children on their farm south of Clarence. Don also worked at the FMC plant in Cedar Rapids for 20 years, retiring in 1984. He and Pat moved to Cedar Rapids in 1980. They then moved to Silvercrest Assisted Living in Davenport in December 2008. He was most recently a member of St. Joseph Parish in Marion, Iowa, before moving to Davenport.

Survivors include his wife, Pat; his children, Mary of Elkhart, Indiana; Dorothy (Ken) of DeWitt; Thomas (Vicki) of Clarence; and Jeanne (Mike) Burdett of Silt, Colorado; 5 grandchildren, Karen and Kyle Sheldon and Doug (Rachel),Dana and Brad Pruess; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Pruess of Clarence.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marvin.
