CLINTON — The Clinton Fire Department was called to the scene of a spill at Archer Daniels Midland Corn Sweeteners on Monday morning.

Fire crews were dispatched at 9:42 a.m. to 14th Street and Lincolnway Boulevard for a citizen complaint of a strong ammonia odor in the area.

They traced the source to the ADM Corn Sweeteners plant, 1251 Beaver Channel Parkway. According to a press release from the fire department, fire crews were met at the gate by ADM plant personnel who escorted them to the area of the incident.

Fire crews were then informed of an incident resulting from the off-loading of Quab 188 into a vessel containing sodium hydroxide.

ADM personnel evacuated the immediate area of the vessel.

The Clinton Fire Department requested the Davenport Fire Hazmat Team and Clinton County Emergency Management Director Chance Kness to assist at the scene. According to the release, there was no immediate danger to the public because the incident was confined to the plant.

The Davenport Hazmat Team determined that the release was confined to the building of origin. The scene was turned over to ADM for cleanup.
