DEWITT — Ralph I. Brooks, 84, DeWitt, died Thursday evening, March 6, 2009, at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt.

Ralph Irving Brooks was born June 6, 1924, north of Welton, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Maurine (Anderson) Brooks. Ralph was a veteran of the United States Army. On August 12, 1945, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Martin Wells. Ralph retired from Alcoa Works in Riverdale where he worked in the computerized accounting department.

He was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt. Ralph was the mayor of Riverdale, Iowa, from 1972 until 1981. He also was a 20-year member of the Riverdale Volunteer Fire Department and chairman of the Bi State Planning Commission for two years. Ralph enjoyed golf and playing cards.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne; children, Marcia Connard and her husband, Tom, The Woodlands, Texas, and Robert Brooks and his life partner, Mark Ruggeberg, Iowa City, Iowa; grandchildren, Chris (Jill) Connard, Olathe, Kansas, and Tom (Maggie) Connard, San Francisco, California; great-grandchildren, Carson and Carly Connard; his sister, Beverly (Dillon) Romer, Maquoketa, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will greet friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2009, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2009, at First Congregational United Church of Christ, DeWitt. The Rev. Jeff Wartgow will officiate with burial at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt. Memorials may be made to the church, DeWitt Hospital Foundation or the charity of the donor’s choice.
