Aug. 23 event in DeWitt aids cancer patients, families

DeWITT — A new fund-raising event to benefit cancer patients and their families will take place Aug. 23 at Murphy’s Pub Event Hall in DeWitt.

Organizers are raising money for the The Russell and Ann Gerdin American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Iowa City, which provides financially struggling cancer patients and their caregivers a home away from home during treatments. It provides free lodging and homelike amenities such as community kitchens, laundry rooms and recreational areas.

Last year, Hope Lodge provided 15,640 nights of free lodging, a savings valued at $1,564,000 for patients and families affected by cancer, organizers said. Of that total, $91,000 directly benefited Clinton County residents.

On Aug. 23, A dinner and entertainment will be provided by Ebony Illusion, and there will be a live auction. Ron Nielsen, a Hope Lodge participant and cancer survivor, will deliver a short presentation.

Tickets are being distributed by the event’s main sponsors, KROS Radio, of Clinton, and DeWitt Bank and Trust, and by committee members, including Dan Srp, Eric Van Lancker, Shawn Hamerlinck, Julie Matzen, Michelle Pearson, Emily Gipe and Karen Roode. For information, call Roode at (563) 249-1810.
