Cleaning up

City crews remove snow from the middle of Sixth Avenue South on Tuesday. Following the last snow, city employees worked 12-hour shifts with 12 vehicles, totaling about 288 hours as of Tuesday, city officials said. Workers hauled away about 648 truckloads of snow, dumping it on Liberty Avenue. In a typical winter, the city uses 3,000 tons — 6,000,000 pounds — of salt, or about 375 tons per snow event, officials said. Twenty-two city employees from the street, sewer maintenance, solid waste and facilities and grounds departments worked to clear the streets.
