THE HERALD'S OPINION: Today we grieve

This may be a great time to help a good cause and take advantage of the tax benefits that come from donating to charities like United Way of Clinton County, Iowa at the same time.

I love living in Clinton County. I was raised here and I have appreciated the caring culture we have here. It has been decades since I stopped delivering the local newspaper but my old customers still wave as I go by and the woman whose lawn I mowed in high school calls me by name when she sees me. I see people chatting with each other while they wait in check-out lines and the employees of the grocery stores and banks are familiar faces who are kind to my kids while they work. We are a community.

I believe that most people in our area want to help one another, especially those who are less fortunate. And they want to support good causes that make a difference in our community. But while many are willing, most aren't sure of the best way to go about offering help.

UWCCI can help with this. It is an organization that connects people who want to make a difference to people in need of that difference. It operates locally, specifically serving the needs of our area, and relies entirely on the support of community individuals and businesses so your contributions help people throughout Clinton County. Just a few of the organizations the UWCCI works with are the Salvation Army, the Boy Scouts of America, the YWCA, and many of the local school districts, including Central DeWitt Community Schools and Northeast Community Schools.

Apart from helping a good cause, your contribution to the United Way may come with some tax benefits. It’s worth asking your tax professional about using contributions to UWCCI as charitable rollovers to satisfy RMD’s and bundling contributions to maximize your charitable deductions.

United Way of Clinton County, Iowa is an easy and effective way for you to make a difference in your community. If you're willing to make a donation or want more information, please contact the UWCCI office at 242-1209, check out their website at, or look at their Facebook page under United Way of Clinton County, Iowa.
