Give a gift to boost nonprofits

Author, poet, and civil rights activist Maya Angelou once said: “When you learn, teach; when you get, give.”

These are inspiring words that are simple yet challenging. Those who have been blessed know to pay forward. There are many members of the Clinton community who are paying-forward people. We give thanks to all the generous people in Clinton who believe that you get more when you give more.

On May 10, River Bluff Community Foundation will again be part of Great Give Day, along with its local nonprofit endowment fundholders, the YWCA, the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, the Felix Adler Children’s Discovery Center, and the Clinton Public Library.

Great Give Day is a 24-hour online giving event hosted by the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque and allows these five local nonprofits to raise dollars and share their mission with the community.

The YWCA, the Felix Adler Discovery Center, the Clinton Public Library and the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre – think of Clinton without these wonderful local organizations. We benefit so much from their presence in our community. We sometimes take for granted that they enhance the quality of our lives here in Clinton. I can’t even imagine being in Clinton without these organizations. They are our landmarks.

To ensure their lasting presence, they work hard to grow their endowments with the River Bluff Community Foundation. Their endowment funds are what ensure their presence in perpetuity, long after some of us are gone but our children and grandchildren will continue to enjoy. Gifts of $50 or more qualify for the Endow Iowa 25% state tax credit. All Great Give Day donations are 100 percent tax deductible.

On May 10, young and old, all of us, can show our appreciation for these landmarks in Clinton, Iowa. Make a gift of $10 or more and spread the word in person and on social media (or schedule your gift ahead of time beginning April 19). Facebook message your families and friends all over the country and ask them to remember their hometown fondly and with great support for these organizations that continue to serve and offer us the privilege of home in Clinton.
