United Way campaign chairman: Donations needed

Why should you give to United Way of Clinton County, Iowa?

As chairman of the United Way of Clinton County, Iowa’s campaign, I’m often asked “Why should I give to UWCCI?” When you give to UWCCI, 99 cents of every dollar stays here in Clinton County to help fund 22 local agencies this year.

Each agency has compelling and real stories that affect thousands in our community. Moreover, in my position as superintendent of the Clinton School District, these stories have faces and obstacles that I see every day. Our school staff works with the agencies, families, and students on a daily basis. Their struggle is real and is happening in our schools, homes, and streets of Clinton County.

I have the opportunity to visit and talk to the different local agencies that United Way of Clinton County, Iowa supports. Here are just four of the local agencies that UWCCI is helping to support this year and what they use some of their funds for:

- Clinton County Special Athletes (Special Olympics) provides athletic opportunities for more than 120 special-needs individuals in nearly a dozen different sports.

- DeWitt Referral Center provides emergency food, clothing and referrals for assistance to more than 600 individuals.

- Family Resources provides emergency help for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes. Last year this agency assisted 57 victims of sexual assault, 200 victims of domestic violence and 108 victims of violent crimes.

- YWCA Clinton affects more than 200 men, women and children with programs funded by UWCCI, by providing quality child care, educational programming, housing assistance for the homeless and membership scholarships for low-income individuals and families.

The United Way of Clinton County’s campaign goal for this year is $650,000. We have had a great start, with many people and businesses stepping up and surpassing their goals. However, we are currently at only 60 percent of our overall goal. Please consider contributing and being part of the solution! Contributions may be sent to the Clinton United Way office at 405 S. Third St., Suite 200, Clinton, IA 52732 or by calling the office at 242-1209 to make a payment over the phone.

This is the season of giving. Please consider supporting United Way of Clinton County, Iowa. All gifts stay local and make a difference.

Gary DeLacy,

2018 United Way of Clinton County, Iowa Campaign Chairman
