The Prince of Peace girls basketball team celebrates following their regional win over Midland Feb. 11 in Clinton.

CLINTON — The Prince of Peace girls basketball team (15-4) defeated Midland (4-15) 63-32 in a Class 1A regional first round game Monday at the Joe O’Donnell Athletic Center.

The Irish move on to host Marquette Catholic in a regional quarterfinal at 7 p.m. on Feb. 16.

“I think our team play and our ball movement — and we were a little concerned about closing out on defense, so we put a lot of effort on that and the girls did a nice job of closing them out and they didn’t have a lot of success shooting like they did the last time we played them,” Irish assistant coach Andy Isenhour said.

“Our ball movement on offense really, really came around. The kids were moving without the ball and it gave us a couple options. We’ve been stressing that in practice, to have multiple options and we did tonight.”

The Irish got off to a slow start, but picked it up and were able to find their footing.

“I think we were a little nervous coming out because we weren’t making a lot of the little shots, but we ran hard and we worked together as a team and that’s what helped us win tonight by a good margin,” Prince of Peace senior Anabel Blount said.

Blount led all players with 19 points. Isabel Hansen had 15 points. Paige Kuehl and Sarah Moeller each added 10 points.

Irish coach Dave Nelson is still out battling an illness, and his photo took its usual spot on the bench.

“We’re on a mission,” Isenhour said. “Although Dave is not here with us, we’ve all been around him long enough to know what the marching orders are and we’re trying to put our best foot forward for him and we pray nightly for a speedy recovery. We’re getting a lot of inspiration from him.”

Blount said the Irish don’t plan on being done anytime soon.

“A lot of us are seniors and we don’t want it to end, so that’s a lot of motivation for us — to go as hard as we can and go as far as we can,” Blount said.
