DEWITT — Several ranked wrestlers will hit the mat this weekend in the Class 2A district wrestling tournament at Central DeWitt.
Area teams Camanche, Central DeWitt, Maquoketa and Northeast will be represented at the district 2 tournament. The district champion and runner-up in each weight class moves on to the state tournament in Des Moines, scheduled for next week.
Here's a look at the qualifers and wrestlers in each weight class represented by an area wrestler.
According to Thepredicament.com rankings, this weight class should favor freshman Keaton Zeimet, of Central DeWitt. Zeimet is ranked No. 3 in the latest rankings and will square off against unranked foes at Saturday's district tournament.
Camanche sophomore Ben Vogel (27-17) is another area wrestler in this bracket. Vogel lost to Zeimet by fall in 36 seconds during the sectional round. Zeimet has only one blemish on his record this season at 39-1. Other qualifers are Center Point-Urbana freshman Cole Whitehead and Monticello sophomore Alaina Sunlin.
Two ranked wrestlers will highlight this weight class, with No. 2 Kain Luensman, freshman, of Monticello, coming in as a sectional champion after defeating Dyersville Beckman's Mason Recker by major decision.
Luensman will be joined by Central DeWitt freshman Robert Howard (31-7), who finished second at the sectional meet to No. 7 Ryan Clark, a junior from Mount Vernon.
Howard lost 2-0 in the sectional final to Clark. That was an improvement for Howard from their last meeting at the WaMaC meet, when Clark defeated Howard 7-1.
District champion Cade Everson, a freshman from Camanche, will be the lone area representative in the 132-pound class. He finished first Saturday against Christian Haight, of Solon. Haight also advanced to this week's district tournament.
Other qualifiers are Chase Luensman, a junior from Monticello, who finished first in his sectional, and Grant Hoeger, of Dyersville Beckman. Luensman is ranked No. 7 in the state.
Northeast's Remington Overstake will bring a 28-14 record into the district tournament. Overstake finished second at sectionals, losing to Solon's Andy Brokaw 10-3.
They'll be joined by No. 9 sophomore Adam Hansen (32-7), of Center Point-Urbana, and Mitchell Engelbart of Anamosa. Hansen is the only wrestler in this class with less than 14 losses this season.
Camanche junior Eric Campie will square off in a district weight class that features one ranked wrestler. Campie, a sectional champion, brings in a 39-9 record.
No. 8 Dyersville Beckman senior Jake Recker is 37-3 on the season after winning his sectional. Campie and Recker will be joined by Dubuque Wahlert's Andrew Johnson (10-14) and Solon's Caleb Ebert (25-20), who lost by fall to Campie in the sectional round.
Two ranked wrestlers will see if they can put on another display similar to the sectional round. Camanche junior Baylor Crigger (42-3) defeated Solon junior Zack Bevans in sudden victory in the sectional round.
Both advanced to the district tournament, and both are ranked, with Crigger owning the edge at No. 6 and Bevans at No. 10.
Maquoketa sophomore Abraham Michel also will wrestle in this weight class, after winning his sectional against Anamosa's Nathan Keating.
Northeast senior Wyatt Schmidt did not draw a favorable assignment for the district tournament this weekend.
Schmidt defeated Seamus Poynton of Solon on Saturday to win the sectional round. However, the district class will feature No. 1 Josh Ramirez, of Dubuque Wahlert, and No. 3 Luke Hageman, of Dyersville Beckman.
Ramirez edged Hageman in the sectionals 15-13.
Central DeWitt senior Nick Smith will enter the district round as the top-ranked wrestler in his bracket. Smith is ranked No. 5 and defeated Camron Woodley, of Mount Vernon, 6-2, on Saturday.
Smith has just one loss this season.
Other qualifiers in this district are No. 10 Declan Duffy, senior, Dubuque Wahlert, and Austin Koopman, senior, Dyersville Beckman.
The final weight class for area competitors is likely the most loaded district.
Three ranked wrestlers will enter the districts, with top-ranked Boone McDermott, senior, Dubuque Wahlert, leading the way.
The other two ranked wrestlers, No. 10 Kolby Snodgrass, of Camanche, and No. 8 Zach Wegmann, of Solon, already squared off in the sectional round. Snodgrass won that tilt in sudden victory.
The final qualifier is Luke Stahlberg, of Monticello. The four wrestlers have a combined 19 losses entering this weekend's action.
