DAVENPORT — A near-school record jump from senior Jaelen Boysen led the Clinton River Kings to a fifth place finish at the 83rd Annual Jesse Day Relays at Brady Street Stadium on Thursday night.
“I thought the boys competed hard tonight,” Clinton Coach Tony Smith said following the meet. “The weather was much better than what it has been and the boys took advantage of the conditions.
“Jaelen Boysen had an outstanding long jump and continues to impress on the track in the relays. Ty McGruder had a good night as well in the relays and 400 low hurdles. Ulysses Patterson had a PR in the long jump, 400, and 200 tonight. Kaleb Galant had some good throws in both the shot and discus and Noah Smith ran an excellent 800 in the medley.
“A lot of guys are stepping up and contributing. It will be exciting to see where everyone is at in a month.”
Jared Simpson added a fourth place finish in high jump.
Along with the individual performances, the spring medley relay team made up of Alex Tholen, Ethan Barry, Boysen and McGruder finished third, as did the distance medley team of Favin Williams, Bret Myli, Brennan Weets and Noah Smith.
Also grabbing third place was the 4x200-meter relay team of Tholen, Barry, Simpson and Kendall Austin and the 4x400-meter relay team of Austin, Weets, McGruder and Boysen.
The River Kings return to Clinton for the River King Gateway Classic Invitational on Tuesday at River King & Queen Athletic Complex. That meet begins at 4 p.m.
EPWORTH — The River Queens ran their way to a sixth place finish at Western Dubuque on Thursday.
Central DeWitt also grabbed a fifth place finish at the same meet.
Alex Laufenberg led the River Queens with a win in the discus, thrown 109-07. This was nine feet above the next longest throw.
Sarah Goldensoph added a fourth place finish in the same event, and finished second in the shot put. Kimberly Powell grabbed fourth in the shot.
Olivia Calvin finished fourth in high jump for the Queens as well to round out the field events.
For running, Kaedyn Schutte and Lauren Bauer finished fifth and sixth in the 3,000-meter run. Madi Eberhart grabbed a fourth place finish in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.42, while Meghan Hill came in seventh.
Paige Suessmith came in fifth in the 400-meter dash.
The 4x200-meter relay team of Eberhart, Tahlicia Bailey, Hill, and Molly Champman also grabbed a fourth place finish.
The Queens head across the Mississippi on Tuesday for the Steamer Relays at Fulton High School. That meet begins at 4:15 p.m.
