KEWANEE, Il. – Clinton junior Joe Simpson played one of his best rounds of golf this season for a third place finish in the Mississippi Athletic Conference on Friday when the conference held it’s tournament at Kewanee Dunes Golf Course.

Simpson’s 74 on the day earned him the finsih and 1st Team All-Conference honors.

“He had two bad holes but came back and played outstanding golf,” head coach Paul Niedermeyer said. “He had been in a bit of a slump lately but had his best round of hte year. It’s a good time to do that.”

The River Kings finished sixth overall as a team with a 356, beating Davenport North, Central and West in the process.

“We had an overall okay day, probably shooting a little better than we have,” Niedermeyer said. “We gained a little confidence going into Monday.”

Ty Koehler was Clinton’s next best score with an 89 on the day.

Andrew Brisch shot a 94 an Andrew Reed a 99. Josh Riessen shot a 102 and Noah Hayton a 113.

District golf is Monday for the Kings. It was originally scheduled to be played at Valley Oaks in Clinton but has been moved to Glynns Creek Golf Course in Long Grove.

“It’s just too wet, not very playable,” Niedermeyer said about the decision to change locations. “I don’t want a course that isn’t in good enough shape.

“We’d love to have it here of course but sometimes the decision you want to make isn’t the one you should.”

Tee time is 10:30 a.m. on Monday for the chance to qualify for the state golf meet. The state tournament starts Oct. 11.
